Day Zero Project - Creative Writing Prompt 1
A few months ago I came across the Day Zero Project site (my username’s laNerys) and one of the things on my list to do in 1001 days is write on 20 creative writing prompts from creativewritingprompts.com. And this is my first attempt.
‘In 200 words describe a hot day’
Silence.
After the heat that’s what hits me about August in the city. Almost without warning, the city becomes deserted, leaving behind a few unfortunate residents who have to work or can’t escape the city for the month. Nearly all the shops are closed, people have been left to fend for themselves. The odd car passes on the street below, beneath my balcony. A bus every so often too, almost always empty.
Silence.
Apart from the sound of the radio coming from the earphone in my right ear. I sip some of my orangeade, by now the ice cubes are frozen, but the drink’s still cool compared to the heat of the day. The tiles of the balcony are boiling hot if I’m not careful enough to rest them on the towel. Stretched out on the balcony it’s almost too hot to move. The humidity is almost unbareable. I carry on reading, every so often looking around me, at the other balconies of my block of flats. But there’s nobody around.
Silence.
Except for the church tower striking two. It seems as if I’m the only person around to hear them. Summer days are lonely for us who have been left behind in the city, trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Abroad, they say there’s no point in learning Italian. All you need to do is watch the hands. It’s not true, but there is insight in the insult.
